Keeping this from your children

How a teenager or a grown-up child can come across a dating app, and what to keep off the phone, the profile, and the first meeting.
A phone lying face down on a kitchen table, next to a closed laptop.

Your children do not need to know you are on a dating site until you decide to tell them. A teenager with the family iPad, or a grown-up child who knows your passcode, can come across it without anyone meaning them to. The ordinary leaks are a lock-screen preview, a shared photo library, and an account left signed in on a tablet that is not only yours.

Turn off notification previews on the lock screen. Do not use a photo of your children, their names, their school, or their routine anywhere on the profile or in an early message. The first meeting stays in a public place, and it stays without them. The single-parent guide is that rule in full. You are not hiding them. You are refusing to introduce them to someone you have not met.

Say that you have children if you have them. "I have children who live with me, so my time is planned" is enough. You do not owe a stranger their ages, which nights they are with you, or a picture. A person who pushes to meet them early, or to come to the house, can be blocked. You do not owe an explanation.

If a grown-up child would rather you were not dating, that is their feeling, and it is not a fact you have to put on a profile. You can still keep the account off a phone they borrow. Sign out on any device that is not yours. What your phone gives away is the longer list, if you want the settings.

Only Dating is for adults. Children should not be on it, in a photo, or in a conversation about meeting anyone under 18. The age check is free. Until it is done, you cannot message, and other members' photos stay blurred. If the worry is a parent, a sibling, or a community, when your family would talk is that page.
